WHAT IS EFT & MTT?

EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique and most MTT, meridian tapping techniques refers to therapies that use both mind awareness and energetic interventions together in a particular treatment format. There are a number of wonderful energy modalities like Reiki, and TT (therapeutic touch) for example but what differentiates EFT and meridian tapping techniques is the brilliant combination of using cognitive and emotional processes in combination with specific meridian points on the body together.

Correcting a disruption in the energy system through tapping meridian points and tuning into the unwanted emotional disturbance simultaneously, disturbing emotions have the potential to collapse and assist a movement towards a more balanced state within. From the point of view of EFT, painful physical, emotional and spiritual symptoms are the result of a disruption in the energy system. It is often referred to as acupuncture without needles.

The EFT discovery statement states

“The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.”

- Gary Craig EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique

This is a new and bold paradigm shift in how we have traditionally looked at the cause for negative emotions and sets the path for a new way in which we can help people alleviate emotional pain.

Some clients can mobilize incredible internal shifts through insight alone. Awareness is an important piece. Common relaxation methods, breathing awareness and meditation have proven to be very beneficial to many individuals and nicely dovetail into an integrative counselling model. However, if we are to move into a holistic model of care; a body, mind, spirit focused model, where does the body piece fit in?

EFT can provide the client with a strategy, a self empowerment tool to assist them in learning to deal with their emotions.

Meridian Tapping Techniques (MTT) is a more generic term which encompasses all meridian based techniques of which EFT is one of many being used by counsellors, coaches and health practitioners today. Other meridian techniques being used today are:

  • TFT (Thought Field Therapy), developed by Roger Callahan,
  • TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique), developed by Tapas Flemming,
  • WHEE (Whole Health Easily and Effectively), Dr. Benor,
  • SET (Simple Energy Techniques), Steve Wells and Dr. David Lake
  • The CHOICES METHOD by Patricia Carrington

EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, as developed by Gary Craig, is a simple self empowerment technique that is easy to learn. EFT is considered one of the many Meridian Tapping Techniques (MTT) available and my preferred choice when working with clients because of its simplicity and effectiveness.

EFT can be easily used to induce a rapid state of relaxation anytime anywhere which in and of itself allows the body to relax and open to the potential for healing. Many people have reported success using these techniques on their own. However, it is important is for each person to take full responsibility for the use of EFT, and recognise when you need further assistance from a counsellor or therapist.

Persistent and daily use of EFT in managing your day to day negative emotions, in my experience, is a great tool for managing and dealing with stress.
